Credit card balances have therefore grown much faster than the number of consumers using cards.
CIBIL’s data shows that the number of consumers with live cards increased 3.6 times from March 2016 to March 2026, while outstanding balances increased 8.3 times.
The average outstanding balance per cardholder also increased from ₹31,000 in March 2016 to ₹65,000 in March 2026.

How Many Credit Card Defaults Are There in India?
TransUnion CIBIL reports credit card delinquency using days past due (DPD) rather than a single default rate.
As of March 2026, 8.1% of credit card balances were 90 to 179 days past due, while 1.7% were 180 days or more past due. CIBIL classifies the 180+ DPD category as write-offs in this analysis.
A write-off means the lender considers the debt unlikely to be recovered, although the borrower may still owe the money.
